SearchMyFiles – flexible files and their duplicates search
I wanted to do a post on how important it is to discover recently created files when cleaning up malware. And realized that I actually have no app that performs this easily enough.
Luckily topic was saved when recent update refreshed in my memory SearchMyFiles (another fine Nirsoft utility) that is highly flexible file search utility.
What it does
By mechanics app is generic on-demand file search utility. What makes it different from most is that search constraints are customizable to the max.

Search can be narrowed down by:
- folder structure;
- file sizes;
- file attributes;
- file timestamps.
Altogether it allows to run very precise searches.
Strong features
In addition to being highly customizable there is also excellent command line support. So, for example, search for recent and possibly malware files can be run as:
start “” SearchMyFiles.exe /FilesWildcard *.exe;*.dll;*.sys /BaseFolder c:\ /FileTimeCreated 5 /FileTimeCreatedLastXX 1
Last version also got duplicates search mode, which matches and color-codes files that are binary equal.
Downsides
While command line support is great it is a bother to mess with it for every search that needs saving. Many file-related utilities can save settings from graphical interface to profile files or command line text. This one could really use such functionality.
As with most on-demand searches performance is limited. It is not inferior to similar utilities, but comparing to those that make use of indexing (like Everything) it definitely feels sluggish.
Overall
Highly flexible, scriptable and completely portable. Perfect choice when search speed does not matter.

I love nirsoft. probably my favorite. I’ll have to make sure I check it out, because this looks useful.
I was hoping you’d post something today. Merry Christmas, brother. I hope all is well for you and yours.
I have been using this software for some year and it work as well for me
@Rush
Yeah, Nirsoft provides plenty of awesome software. I just can’t wait for final release of Nirsoft launcher for its apps because there are so much utilities it is troublesome to follow them separately.
Around here Christmas is celebrated in January so yesterday was just a regular day for me. :)
